I was 12 when I heard about the change. My favorite player was going to be released. He had been my favorite for many years. I even had a real jersey from him because he was such a great player. I remember my dad talking about it to my mom in the kitchen.
"Yeah, Ernie had a good career, but he just doesn't have it anymore. His range is gone."
I wanted to disagree but I was too young. I knew he had hit a career high in homers. I wondered why he would retire. That's what the paper was saying ... Ernie Wyles retired after one of his best offensive seasons. I had heard that he looked for a job but nobody was offering.
"He'll probably end up coaching someplace," my dad said. "He knows baseball. He's a good player. Yeah, he'll coach."
I'd rather was number twelve play short stop, but if he had to coach, maybe he could coach third base for the Tigers. That would be cool. That would almost be playing. I was hoping that it wasn't going to be bad to be a Tiger fan!
